Laboratory Research Directions
The survival and health of animals, including humans, largely depend on the precise regulation and maintenance of energy and essential nutrient levels in the body, and the central nervous system (CNS) plays an indispensable role in this regard. By real-time sensing of energy and nutrient reserves within the body, as well as the distribution of food in the environment, the CNS ensures metabolic balance in animals through sophisticated behavioral regulation. Once this regulatory mechanism is disrupted, it may trigger a series of neural and metabolic diseases, including eating disorders and obesity.
Our laboratory has broad interests in biological questions related to the interaction between the nervous system and metabolic system. Our recent research will primarily use techniques such as quantitative behavioral analysis, in vivo calcium imaging, genetic screening and analysis, single-cell transcriptomics, and circuit tracing in Drosophila and mouse models to investigate the following two independent but interrelated biological questions:
How does the nervous system participate in the regulation of energy and essential nutrient metabolism in the body?
How do various organs in animals collaborate in the regulation of body metabolism and the occurrence of metabolic diseases?
